English Language stuff J

Language has many different functions, which are all vital for us humans to be as we are. One of these functions is a means of conveying information, which is usually assumed to be a core function of language. Conveying information is telling other people things like “Morning tea will be at 10:30” and “Kangaroos live in Australia” but language is not very good at giving spatial information, like explain somebody how to draw a picture.

Language is also an instrument of action, and can like that one in a few different ways. Such as to direct, like a recipe or a DIY set of instructions.
To command, as in controlling the behaviour, feelings or attitudes of others.
As a means of getting things, such as the phrase “I want”
In an authoritative manner, such as laws statutes and like the oath “I swear by almighty god to tell the truth..”

It’s also a means of maintaining social relationships, “Talking for the sake of talking” which has a strong social importance in promoting interaction between people.

Language is also a marker of groups, to label group membership, to separate those that are ‘in’ and those who are ‘out’. This is done though the choice of vocabulary. For example “DMR, Uncaged, Master Chief” people in this conversation must have some knowledge about Halo. Just about everything has its own set of vocabulary.

Language is also an instrument of cognitive and conceptual development. Such as, when we are first developing language as a baby, we have to get what we want, such as a ball or water, we have to use language. And if you want to be amazing at Halo, you’ll need to learn the terminology as well as some proficiency.
